Combination Brows PMU: What to Expect, Healing, and Is It Right for You?
Combination brows blend two techniques: fine, hair-like strokes for definition and a soft powder shade for depth. The result is a natural-looking brow with shape and fullness, without needing to fill them in every morning.
How it works
Pigment is placed into the upper layers of the skin using a fine needle. Hair strokes are drawn to follow your natural growth pattern, then a soft shade is added to build density and keep the brow looking balanced. It works well for sparse or patchy brows, over-plucked brows, uneven shapes, and anyone who wants a polished brow with less daily effort.
Why combination rather than strokes or shading alone?
Hair strokes alone can look sparse on some skin types and tend to fade faster. Shading alone can look flat. Combining the two gives a more natural finish and a result that tends to hold better over time. Your skin type and the look you want will decide how much of each is used, and we'll agree that at your consultation.
What the appointment involves
Consultation and patch test. We talk through your goals, check your skin and brow history, and choose a pigment to suit your hair colour and undertone.
Brow mapping. Your shape is measured and drawn to suit your face, and you approve it before anything begins.
Numbing. A topical anaesthetic is applied so you're comfortable.
Treatment. Hair strokes are added first, followed by soft shading where needed.
Allow around two to three hours in total.
Healing: what's normal
Days 1–3: Brows look darker and sharper than the final result. Some tenderness or mild redness is common.
Days 4–10: Light flaking as the skin renews. Don't pick, as this can pull pigment out.
Weeks 2–4: Colour can look faded or patchy. This is a normal stage and not the final result.
Week 6 onwards: The true colour and healed strokes show. A follow-up session refines the shape and fills any gaps.
Aftercare essentials
Keep the area clean and apply a very thin layer of recommended balm.
Avoid soaking the brows in the shower, and keep them away from steam, saunas and swimming for the first week or two.
Avoid picking, peeling or scrubbing.
Avoid makeup, skincare actives and sun exposure on the brows while healing.
Use SPF on the brows once healed to help preserve the colour.
How long does it last?
Typically one to three years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure and skincare. Oilier skin tends to fade faster. Colour refreshes keep the brows looking their best.
Is combination brows right for you?
It suits most people who want a more defined, fuller brow that still looks like their own. It isn't suitable if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin condition or infection in the brow area, or have certain medical conditions. We'll go through all of this at your consultation.
Combination brows FAQs
Does it hurt? A numbing cream is applied before and during treatment. Most clients feel light pressure or mild scratching rather than pain. Comfort varies from person to person.
Will they look natural? That's the aim. The strokes follow your natural growth pattern and the shading is kept soft. Brows look strongest in the first week, then settle to a softer finish as they heal.
Do I need a follow-up appointment? A follow-up session is usually recommended after the first six weeks to refine shape and colour. After that, colour refreshes are done as and when you feel they've faded.
Can I have it done if I have oily skin? Often, yes. Oilier skin can make strokes soften more quickly, which is one reason combination brows is a popular choice. We'll talk through what suits your skin at your consultation.
What if I have very little brow hair? Combination brows can work well for sparse brows. The shading adds density where there isn't enough hair to draw strokes.
How do I prepare? Avoid alcohol, blood-thinning medication (unless prescribed), waxing or tinting the brows, and any strong skincare actives for around 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Let me know in advance if you've had Botox, filler or other treatments near the brow area.
